視覚から嗅覚までの４つの感覚は、各自固有のものですが、触覚は宇宙全体とも繋がっている生命力である点が重要なのです。全身にくまなく分布する触覚は既存の４感覚に感覚機能を与え、それらが感受した信号を脳に伝える大事な機能を担っている他に、触覚の助けを受ければ、遠隔地の出来事をも４感覚は知覚することが出来ると言っています。
その背景には、私達の持つ触角がむしろ、主体となる感覚要素であり、４感覚は補助的なものと言うべき関係があります。光の無い海底でも多くの生き物が棲息していますし、視覚は生存に不可欠という訳ではありません。聴力もしかりです。多くの生物は触覚を中心として生きているようです。同様に様々な予知反応を多くの生き物が見せますが、それもこの触覚の活用ということが出来ることでしょう。未だ現実化していない、イメージの段階でも物事を触覚を通じて感知することも意識に繋がる触覚だからこその機能ということになります。
