363 There is a vast difference between true thinking, and the misguided faculty of indiscriminate reasoning. Only two planes of life have the power of reasoning - animals and human beings. While as far as we know the vegetable and mineral kingdoms are devoid of reasoning, and the animal possesses this faculty only to a limited degree, all three planes of life manifestation respond to pressures without resistance. Because of his ability to reason, we have believed man to be the highest type of life on this planet. But actually, indiscriminate reasoning has so perverted his capacity to think universally that in many ways man is much lower than mere plant life. For plant life accepts and acts upon the impulses of nature, without questioning life's purpose.
363 真の思考と見境のない誤って導かれた推論との間には大きな相違があります。生命の内２つの平面、動物界と人間だけが推論の能力を持っています。一方、私達が知る限り、植物や鉱物界には推論は欠いており、動物もこの能力をただ限られた範囲に持っている一方、これら３つの生命の創造の平面は全て抵抗なく圧力に呼応します。その推論の能力の故から、私達人間がこの惑星上で最も高位であると信じて来ました。しかし実際には、見境のない推論は人間の宇宙普遍に思考する能力を誤らせ、多くの場合、人間は単なる植物の生命より低次に置かれています。何故なら植物は自然の衝動に対し、受け入れ行動するからです。

心の有り様について前項（３６２）では真の思考の意味について述べられていました。本項ではそれに対応する心の推論機能（reasoning)について述べられています。
私自身、今もって著者が描くreasoningの意図をはっきり掴んでいる訳ではないのですが、本項及び後に続くいくつかの記述を読む限り、「やたらに知りたいと思う心」「じっくり考えようとするのではなく、あれこれ思い巡らせる心」というようなイメージかと考えています。
この推論（reasoning)傾向にある心は、論証や事実を積み重ねるという意味では人間だけの能力として、これまでは重視されて来た訳です。しかし、本文にありますように、実際にはそれらの能力を持たない植物や鉱物の方が、はるかに創造主に従っており、上位の生き方をしているという訳です。万物の価値は創造主の意図を如何に表現しているかに尽きるということです。
