306 And speaking of the by-ways - as consciousness is the sea of life everything is living within it. And as the Cosmos knows no beginning or ending, we are living in the embrace of a vast structure which has many interesting things in it, and our attention of interest will shift from one thing to another. This could be likened to standing on the top of a very high tower. While facing east things will be seen that are in that direction, and to the west, the same, etc., etc. So when the sense mind is interested in conscious perception it will want to see everything within the household of consciousness. This could become a hazard, for this hunger for knowledge could promote impatience, and confusion would be the result. So the mind must learn self control. And remember it has eternity in which to learn. With this awareness it will gain knowledge step by step in the sequence of events. And there will be no gaps or divisions that cause divisions and mysteries. The interest of the mind should be of such a nature that time is not involved, only learning what each step has to offer. Then when it is time for the next step to be taken the blend will be there without any foreign element that could come from the mind.
306 脇道については、意識は生命の海であり、あらゆるものがその内側にあるということについて述べましょう。宇宙には始まりも終わりもありませんので、私達はその内側に多くの興味深い物事を持つ広大な構造物に抱かれて生きておりますが、私達の興味は一つのことから他のものに移り変わるものです。これは一つのとても高い塔の頂上に立っていることになぞらえるでしょう。東を向けばその方向にあるものが見えますし、西を向けば、また同様等々です。そのように感覚心が意識的知覚力に関心を持つようになると、心は意識の家庭の中にあるすべてを見たがることでしょう。しかし、これは危険要素に成り得るのです。何故ならこの知識への渇望は性急さを助長し、結果として混乱が生じるだろうからです。ですから心は自制を学ばなければなりません。そして学ぶべきものには永遠があるということを覚えていて下さい。この自覚を持てば、出来事の一連の流れの中で一歩一歩知識を得て行くことでしょう。そしてそこには分裂や神秘を引き起こす如何なる割れ目や仕切りはないことでしょう。心の興味は時間には巻き込まれず、只一つ一つの段階が授けるべきものを学ぶという性質のものであるべきなのです。そうすれば、次なる段階の時期になった時、心から来る無関係の要素が入り込むことなく、融合が起ることでしょう。
【解説】
ここでは意識への知覚力が増して来る際の注意事項について述べています。つまり、物事に対する感性が高まるにつれて、今まで気付かなかった様々な事柄に私達は気付くようになりますが、そこにも注意すべき課題があると言っているのです。
それは丁度、今までの旧式のテレビが数チャンネルしか映らない一方、新しいデジタル放送では数十もの番組を受像できるのと同様です。そのいずれのチャンネルも私達にとっては興味があり、有意義なコンテンツを放送しているとします。こうした環境の中で、とかく私達はやたらとチャンネルを変えて、より興味のある番組を探そうとします。しかし、それでは各々が放送する内容を把握できる筈もなく、結局は何も記憶に残らないということです。
これと同様に意識との一体化が進むにつれて私達は興味本位で知識を追い求めてはならず、それは逆に混乱を招くことを忠告しているのです。私達は決して進歩の道を進むべきでないというのではありません。現時点における自分の理解力以上の知識を取り入れようとはすべきでなく、一つ一つの体験から何も学んだかを整理した後、初めて次の一歩を進めるべきだ、或いはその整理が終わった時、宇宙が貴方に次の段階を用意してくれると言っているのです。
